| Library card a key school item for kids - Dayton Daily News Posted: 03 Sep 2010 01:28 AM PDT By Georgia Mergler, Contributing Writer 11:02 AM Wednesday, August 25, 2010 Wow, where did the summer go? It seems as if school ended just days ago and yet my kids started back this week. I'm feeling pretty good about this school year. For once, we seem to be on the ball with back-to-school shopping. New pants to replace the old ones that now stop at mid-calf — check. New gym shoes to replace the flip flops we've donned all summer — check (and sigh). School supplies to aid in completing school work — check. Note: that last item is only checked off the list because my mother-in–law graciously agreed to take that bullet for me. See, I hate to go school supply shopping. Don't get me wrong, I am a BIG fan of shopping — just not for erasers and glue. Luckily, my kids already have the most important school supply of all — a library card. And for those of you who don't have one, the process is nothing like fighting through the aisles of school supplies at Wal-Mart. Simply visit the library and fill out a form, or visit www.wclibrary.info and complete the form online. Anyone who lives, works or attends school in Ohio can get a library card free of charge. And September is a perfect time to get your child a library card because it is National Library Card Sign Up Month. I have a second-grader and a sixth-grader so their library needs are a bit different when it comes to school. Here are just some of the school related library resources we get as a result of having library cards: • A never ending supply of books that have high frequency sight words, as well as words that may appear on spelling lists. • A great selection of young adult titles that interest my daughter enough to read for the assigned 20 minutes a night. • Interactive and educational games on the computer stations in the library that reinforce language skills — a big bonus for my video game loving son. • Knowledgeable librarians available in person, by phone, email, text or instant message to help you find any resource to solve a tough homework problem. • Free internet access to do school research. • Access to research databases via the library website. • Collections of subject based books for use in the classroom. My husband, a teacher, takes advantage of these collections, but I also see books in my kids' classrooms from the library. While you are out buying pencils, glue sticks and crayons, I encourage you to make a stop at the library for that one last supply (a library card) if your kids don't have one already.
