FLINT — Marcie Mabry nearly kept the tears in for 23 years.

As an assistant Genesee County prosecutor, Mabry had handled some of the worst criminal cases involving children who had died or been badly hurt.

But Mabry couldn't contain her emotions when she heard the brother of Dominick Calhoun, a 4-year-old who died after a severe beating in April, describe such violence in his home as normal discipline.

"He said, 'We're not that bad,' and I just cried," said Mabry, who recently retired from the prosecutor's office.

Mabry's shoes are too big ever  to fill, said Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton.

"The children of Genesee County were well-protected when Marcie Mabry was assigned the case," said Leyton.

Mabry, 50, of Davison Township said she doesn't consider herself "good with kids" but that she likes to listen to them and finds talking to them interesting.

In one high-profile case, Mabry had to coax the story out of a young girl who had been raped along with her mother by Chester L. Kelly, a serial rapist linked to more than 15 rapes from 1989 until his arrest in 1991, according to Flint Journal files.

The girl was so traumatized by the attack that no one had been able to speak to her about it, said Mabry.

New to the prosecutor's office at the time, she brought the little girl into her office and asked if she remembered the day the police came to her home.

The girl said yes but wouldn't reply when she was asked why the police had come.

Mabry asked if the girl had eaten an ice cream cone that day, and the child said yes but that she couldn't finish it. When Mabry asked her why, the girl told her about the attack, including identifying details about Kelly.

"I always find it so interesting what gets them to open up," said Mabry.

Without her family's intervention, she said she could have ended up in the restaurant business.

The Midland native originally intended to become a restaurant manager when she started her college career at Michigan State University.

Her family sat her down and told her she should try law school and become an attorney, something she was surprised to hear and wasn't sure would be a good fit.

"Sometimes other people can see your strengths a little bit better than you can," she said.

Following her retirement, Mabry said she is excited to spend more time with her family.

But she's not closing the door on more work for children.

"I think I have another career left in me, but I'm not in a hurry to figure out what it is," she said.
