Efficient, stylish, inexpensive back-to-school clothing can be summed up in one word: layering.

When kids head back to school, the weather is hot - ripe for T-shirts, short skirts and shorts. You can extend those summer clothes by layering them.

"The key is to work with sleeve and leg lengths," says Debbie Barrett, children's trend manager for JC Penney. "Buy tops and bottoms that you are able to mix and match with what you already have."

When it comes to back-to-school shopping, parents can learn something every year.

If you're a newbie, you might not know - as we didn't - that some teachers send school supply lists out during the summer. Don't ask me how we missed the list one year, but I sure remember the first day of school when I felt like I had to rush to CVS to fix things.

Or you might not know that some children, really, can get along with just two pairs of shoes during most of the year.

The start of the school year doesn't have to break the bank. Here are tips for saving money this season:

SHOPPING: When buying school supplies and clothes, make saving a family affair, said Mike Allen, a father of seven and president of Shopping-Bargains.com. Parents and children should make an inventory of what they need, set a budget and shop together. Teach kids to be price-conscious by letting them keep the savings for coming under budget. "It's a life lesson," Allen said.

"Back to school" is a phrase even parents dread to hear, thanks to the impact that school supplies have on the wallet.

The key to finding deals is to plan it out. Know what supplies you will need. Most schools now offer supply lists on their websites. Some office supply stores even carry the lists.

Family travel five: Still time for travel before summer slips away

Labor Day draws near, and for many it represents the end of summer. That needn't mean your family's summer travel is over. Here are ways to get away as the season winds down.

It's not too late to take advantage of back-to-school savings. Merchants are offering deals and freebies on everything from clothes to pencils to cell phones.

1. Shop at home first Start with a list of what your child needs that first week of school. Then look around the house. Assess and collect binders, paper, pencils and crayons, scratch things off your list, then start shopping.

2. Stock up on clothes... but not too much Make a list of clothes your child needs now. (For a handy sample list of just how many shirts, pairs of pants and socks your kid actually needs for the school year, visit Scholastic's website (http://www2.scholastic.com/browse/article.jsp?id=1296).)

Hold off to buy the rest of your child's wardrobe until later in the year (particularly after the holidays) when cold-weather clothes go on sale. In the meantime, take advantage of sales on summer clothes you'll get a deal and your child will have few new items to wear for the first few weeks of school.

3. Wait on computers and bikes According to Consumer's Union, October and November are the best months to buy small electronics, digital cameras, computers and, yes, bikes. If your child needs an upgrade but can wait a month or two, hold off for another month or two.

4. Look for coupons, freebies and rebates Web merchants are working hard to be competitive with brick and mortar stores, so do an online search for the product brand name with "coupon code" before you check out. Also, look for freebies that retailers are offering to get you into their stores. Recent deals include an iPod Touch with the purchase of a Mac computer and, from Toys "R" Us, a lunch kit when you buy a backpack. Search online for current back-to-school promotions before you head into stores.

5. It's OK if you missed the big sales If you didn't stock up during the summer back-to-school sales, don't worry. Wait a week or two into the school year to buy that new backpack your student has been begging for. Stores will want to clear out inventory once school starts.

TAMPA — The eight children of the women who attempted to help Officers David Curtis and Jeffrey Kocab will receive free back-to-school shoes courtesy of police and the University Mall.

Renee Roundtree, 37, Rose Dodson, 32, and Delores Keen tried saving Curtis and Kocab after the two Tampa officers were fatally shot June 29 during a routine traffic stop.

On Friday, their kids will get to pick out any two pairs of shoes at any store in University Mall. Tampa Police Chief Jane Castor and the department's Black History Committee will join the kids on the shopping trip.

The mall will also treat the families to lunch.

In addition to new shoes, Tampa will assist the women with housing and other back-to-school needs.

The women have also been offered access to a department grief counselor.
