Patty Goldblatt: Yes, kids are judged by what they wear - Gainesville Sun

I am proud to report that the baby of my three kids just graduated from high school this past weekend. Even so, I can't help but put in my two cents about the Alachua County School District's new uniform dress code policy, so here goes:

`

My almost nine-year-old niece came to our house to visit over the Memorial Day weekend. She was running around in flip-flops the whole time, which was driving me crazy. When I asked her where her sneakers were, she told me that she didn't like to wear them because everyone in school told her that her shoes are stupid. Trying to solve what I thought was a simple problem, I told her that for her upcoming birthday I would buy her any style sneakers that she wanted to make hr feel more comfortable at school. As a person who likes to purchase gifts that I, myself, would want, this promise had me biting my lip a little.

So, with uplifted spirits, we took off on our shopping date. I was unprepared for the weight of her decision on what shoes to buy. Over the course of an evening and the following afternoon, we went to three major sporting goods stores, all with plenty of selection. As time went on, I watched this initially upbeat, optimistic child end up in a state of paralysis and ultimately tears as she attempted to choose the right pair of shoes that her classmates would not ridicule. Against my initial intention, I wound up forcing her to make a decision and almost came home with no shoes because it was hot, it was late, it was not fun anymore, and to tell the truth, all of the shoes looked alike to me.

There are two aspects of this story that apply to the school uniform policy, and I'm not sure how they add up. One is that kids definitely judge one another by their style of dress. The other is that even with school uniforms, there always will be something about a kid that others will pick on if they choose. I doubt that sneaker brand will be part of the policy, and of course if the kids find the shoes acceptable, they always will be able to make fun of someone's hair, complexion or teeth. I'm unsure about what this policy ultimately will solve. It seems to me that with or without uniforms, we still need to do a better job of teaching tolerance of others.

Father Thanks Family Of Hero Who Saved His Kids

VIRGINIA KEY (CBS4) ― If you spent one minute in Regulo Acosta's shoes, you'd feel a lifetime of pain. Acosta and his three children, ages 3, 13 and 16 spent the day on Virginia Key Sunday. But as the kids walked along a sandbar, with their 5 year old cousin, tragedy struck.

In Spanish, Acosta told CBS4's Natalia Zea, "A wave came and dragged my daughter away to a deeper part."

The other children began to struggle in the water too. Acosta and his cousin who were watching the kids from shore frantically swam to the drowning children. But neither man could reach them.

"I was thinking, I'm going to lose my son," said Acosta.

A total stranger, 47-year-old Douglas Butler, made it to the children. His nephew Michael Holzknecht was by his side.

"Doug was struggling with the boy. He told the boy,'I got you.' And he lifted the kid above the water. He held him high until more help could come," recalled Holzknecht.

Help did come, but not soon enough for Butler. He died. The medical examiner has not yet determined the official cause of death.

Wiping away streaming tears, Acosta said "To me and my family he is a hero. He helped my son. I will never forget his face that day."

The children's five year-old cousin is still in critical condition. Acosta's two teenagers are ok.

Tuesday his three year-old son began breathing on his own. It's a debt this father will never be able to pay.

"To his family, please forgive me. He lost his life to rescue my son."

Recent relief aid has left Buckner's surplus of shoes dangerously low - OneNewsNow

You can help needy kids receive shoes, which help protect them from diseases, infections and injuries. (Buckner photo)

International (MNN) ― Flip-flops, crocs, clogs, sneakers and high-tops. Buckner International takes any new shoes they can get their hands on and distributes them to needy children around the world through their Shoes for Orphans Souls program.

Currently, however, they face a huge challenge in the form of a shoe shortage.

Since Haiti's January earthquake, Buckner has distributed over 50,000 pairs of shoes, along with medical supplies, food, water and other critical resources. Soon, they will be sending 12,000 more pairs to help Haitian children.

Thanks to a recent donation of 20,000 pairs of shoes from Missouri Rotary and other generous donors and volunteers, they have been able to continue to meet the needs of orphans and vulnerable kids around the world.

However, their surplus is beginning to run dangerously low. If they run out, they will not be able to supply Haitians or other kids from around the world with shoes, which save lives by protecting the feet of children from injuries, infections and diseases.

Not only do these shoes protect children physically and save their lives, but as Buckner distributes shoes, they also share Christ's love with recipients, which changes lives and saves souls.
