$hopGirl: Expanding your shopping zone - MySanAntonio

Posted: 16 Jun 2010 06:47 PM PDT

If you limit your shopping excursions to the North Side, $hopGirl suggests you branch out. On-trend bridal gowns, a hip record store, sparkly beads, sassy shoes and amazing thrift store finds ($1.98 Lacoste shirt, need I say more?) caused $hopGirl to have so much fun, she forgot she was supposed to be working! After you finish your spending spree, grab a bite at a San Antonio classic restaurant such as Bud Jones, Speedy's Chicken, B & B Smokehouse and Don Pedro's Mexican. But we're not eating yet - let's go shopping.

Debi's Bridal, 814 S.W. Military Drive, should be every girl's go-to place for formal dresses. The shop has the latest looks in bridal gowns (and tuxedos), Sweet 16 parties, quincea±eras, baptisms, proms and any other special occasion you can think of. According to manager Thomas Gutierrez, current trends include pickup dresses or tulle, Cinderella-type dresses for quincea±eras and Sweet 16 parties. For wedding dresses, he says ivory or taupe are more popular than white, and he has even sold wedding gowns in red and blue to go with themed weddings. Gutierrez stressed that it's about having fun, dressing up and looking pretty; there aren't any bridezillas at Debi's Bridal.

Beadz & Jewelry by Rox, 238 S.W. Military Drive, is a newer addition to the Southside. This fun beading store has everything you need, including free classes (on Sundays) to learn to make your own jewelry. It carries an extensive line of religious items for retreats as well as crystal beads, pendants, components, sterling beads, freshwater pearls and semiprecious stones such as turquoise. It also offers a few handbags, pins, rings and bracelets and sells retail and wholesale. $hopGirl loved the zebra-print beads in red, yellow, pink and white.

Texas Thrift and Dollar Only, 6708 S. Flores, knows how to display its merchandise! This is no small task as the "Texas" in its name implies. This store is ginormous! There are 25-cent household items on the shelves when you enter. The clothing is hung by size and color, and there's enough room so you can actually see things. You'll find luggage, vacuums, belts and coffee makers. In the back are grab bags of toys for 75 cents to $3.48. Mondays feature 99-cent sales on selected color tags, and Tuesday is Senior Day (55 and up, with ID) for 30 percent off. $hopGirl loved that the drapes, napkins, place mats, tablecloths and bed linens were hung for easier viewing. $hopGirl fell in love with the antique cast-iron headboard for $19.91. Other highlights? The kid's Sharper Image motorcycle, foosball table and original Hardy Boys books.

The $9.95 or $14.95 signs posted on tables outside this Skechers Outlet at 903 S.W. Military Drive let $hopGirl know immediately that bargains were waiting. Most of the men's shoes were in the $29.95 to $49.95 price range, though $hopGirl loved the distressed flip-flops for men at $24.95. A member of the staff told $hopGirl that this location didn't always get the newest items right away, but it carried all the latest styles in kids' shoes including Airators and Hot Lights for boys and Pretty Tall and Twinkle Toes for girls. Shape-Ups were available in a variety of colors for $99.95, $10 off the suggested retail, and the sale racks in the back sported a good selection in most sizes. Be sure to check out the racks at the front of the store, near the socks. These shoes, slippers and flip-flops sold for $5 each - wow!

Flip Side Record Parlor, 840 S.W. Military Drive, makes you feel like you're a little cooler just for walking in. The antique cases and signs set the tone for a homey ambience, while the burning incense gives it its edgy feel. In fact, the double - and triple - scented incense is one of its best sellers. Flip Side also features jewelry, T-shirts, essential oils, $10 sunglasses and more. But its most basic product is the music. Think primarily heavy metal, classic rock, ska and reggae. Flip Side's MySpace page notes that the store doesn't carry Country or Tejano music, but $hopGirl could tell from the customer service that they'd help you order anything you needed. This family-owned business has been around for 38 years and has recently moved to its new location. If you haven't been there in a while or have been looking for a classic music store, this is the place to go. Note before you go: Flip Side also sells tobacco-related products that are most suitable for an adult crowd.

Jennifer Rodriguez is a local freelance writer/researcher who loves to shop in her spare time. $hopGirl can be reached at thebizwriter@gmail.com.

S. Africa trip provides memories for Johnson - Baton Rouge Advocate

Posted: 17 Jun 2010 04:48 AM PDT

On his recently completed trip to South Africa, LSU basketball coach Trent Johnson remembers working with a 6-year old boy he said "was really hard to say goodbye to."

"There's a group of about 20 (young) kids, and none of them have shoes, but none of them are sweating (not having) shoes," Johnson recalled. "Here's a kid, he's going from station-to-station … he's listening, never says a word. He has a runny nose, but he's not crying from 12 to 4 o'clock.

"Think about it. And come back here? I have a guy who complains if I yell at him. Are you kidding me?"

The memory of that 6-year-old working with no shoes and no complaints at the clinics Johnson conducted for TRIAD Trust Foundation, an AIDS education organization, is one of the things that stuck with Johnson upon his return to the states. It was something he shared with the LSU team when he met with them upon his return Monday.

"I said 'Boy oh boy, don't any of you guys even breathe hard or complain about anything after where I just came from,' " Johnson said.

Here, he works with a team that is getting to work in a brand new, recently-completed state-of-the-art practice facility. There, he slept in huts and taught the game on an outdoor court because the region is too poor to have an indoor gym.

He traveled to the Nkomazi Rush Mission for TRIAD —which stands for Training to Reduce the Incidence of AIDS-related Deaths — to conduct the clinics. In the mornings, he'd instruct local adult coaches. In the afternoons, he would be in charge of teaching about 150 kids, ages 6-14. Johnson was there from June 4-14.

He said the skill level of the players from the area was not high, noting that if he was going to Africa to recruit, he'd go to an established basketball country like Senegal. But he said he wouldn't be surprised if catches on in South Africa.

Participants in the program, which also has a soccer league, are required to attend AIDS education classes and submit to HIV testing. The idea is to use sports to help educate youths about the dangers of HIV and HIV prevention.

Local coaches who receive training keep the program going after the Boston-based TRIAD group returns to the U.S. Johnson said he may invite a couple of them to visit the U.S.

Johnson became associated with the group through Sarah Kate Noftsinger, a former Stanford assistant women's soccer coach who knew Johnson when he was Stanford's  basketball coach. Noftsinger now works for TRIAD and recruited Johnson to help.

"I was asked to contribute, to give so to speak, so I just tried to do my part," said Johnson, who also donates to the group financially. "The people who are involved with the TRIAD Trust foundation, led by the leadership of (founder and executive director) Brooke Wurst and Sarah Kate Noftsinger … they have done an excellent job, so it was a unique experience for me."

Johnson said he was moved by some experiences.
