“Put on shoes and come stroll, roll, or run for ALS - Victoria Advocate” plus 1 more |
| Put on shoes and come stroll, roll, or run for ALS - Victoria Advocate Posted: MISSY JANZOW :: RUNNING FOR LIFE The Second Annual Stroll, Roll and Run for ALS will take place this Sunday, Mar. 6 at Riverside Park. ALS stands for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and is commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease. It is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that attacks motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord. It is a devastating disease that results in cell and muscle wasting and ultimate loss of control of all normal muscle functions, including respiration. Last year's event drew approximately 200 participants and raised $18,250 for the fight against ALS. All monies raised benefitted the ALS TDI (ALS Therapy Development Institute), a research only organization seeking a cure and/or treatment for ALS (www.als.net). The event was started by Pastor Bill Hassel, former pastor fo the First English Lutheran Church. Hassel has also been stricken with ALS. Last year's event was part of the film "Breadth of Hope" which you can find more information about at www.breadthofhope.com. This year's run hopes to attract even more participants and raise more money for the fight against ALS. There will be open registration starting at 9 a.m. in the special events area of Riverside Park, followed by "Worship in the Park" at 10:30 a.m. at Riverside Stadium. At 11:30 a.m. meals will be served for anyone wanting to eat, and that will continue until the conclusion of the day's events. The 5K (3.1 mile run or walk or roll) will begin at 12:30 p.m., with the kid's fun run being held afterwards. Although it isn't a chip timed event, there will be timing available and prizes given to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd men and women in each age category, as well as finisher ribbons to all participants in both the 5K and kid's fun run. There will also be prize drawings that all participants will be eligible to win. The Registration fee for the 5K run or walk is $25 and registration includes your event entry, t-shirt, goody bag, a meal and drink. The kids fun run is $10. For more information on the event, visit the event website at www.strollrollnrun.com. An event of this sort presents a unique opportunity to bring the community together for a day of fitness and fun, while money is raised to fight this devastating disease. Hopefully this family event will encourage people to run for those who can't anymore, roll (wheelchair) for those who can't anymore, and stroll (walk) for those who can't anymore because of ALS. I hope to see all of you at the start line. Missy Janzow owns Fit4U, a personalized training and nutrition service.
