Platte County deputies will take kids shopping on Saturday - Kansas City Star

For the 16th year, members of the Platte County Sheriff's Department will host their "Shop with a Deputy" program.

Deputies and other employees with the Sheriff's Department will work on their day off Saturday to help children buy clothes and toys for their families.

This year, deputies will accompany 32 children ages 4 to 15 on a shopping spree at a Northland Walmart.

Each child gets to spend $225.

From that amount, each child must spend at least $170 on clothing. The rest of the money can be spent on toys and gifts for family members or more clothing.

"With the prosperity in Platte County, who would think there would be underprivileged children living in our county?" said Sheriff Richard Anderson.

The program began in 1995 with the Missouri Deputy Sheriffs' Association, which picked three Missouri counties for the shopping spree. Platte County received a $500 grant the first year. That year, deputies accompanied 10 children who each received $50 to spend, Capt. Mark Owen.

"The first year was an eye-opener," Owen said. "Kids showed up wearing hand-me-down shoes, underwear three sizes too big with safety pins, no winter coats.

"Based on that, the deputies involved decided to continue the program and raise money. Whatever amount we were short, we just paid for it ourselves."

The association moved the program to different areas the following year, so Platte County officials decided to undertake the program on an annual basis.

Since then, deputies and other department staff have taken about 475 children shopping.

The program has been funded by public donations and an auction, and when those come up short, department employees have paid for some items themselves.

Owen said over the years, deputies and sheriff's department employees understand and appreciate the value the program.

"This is an opportunity to help but also interact with the children one on one," Owen said. "The deputies build this bond and it is fun to watch."

The Parkville and Riverside police departments will hold similar events Sunday, Parkville Police Chief Kevin L. Chrisman said.
