For the first time in a long while, Valencia Swindell's children are wearing new shoes.

Semajjah, 5, has black slip-ons with sparkly stars on the front. Tommy, 2, sports Lightning McQueen sneakers.

"Oh, those are handsome, Tommy," Semajjah said.

In time for the winter months, Book of Dreams readers purchased new footwear for Swindell's youngsters and the other children from Serna Village at McClellan Park in North Highlands.

The children were having to be creative with their shoes, some wearing sandals over thick socks, and others reinforcing shoes with tape.

Swindell's kids had been wearing secondhand shoes for months. Last time she bought them, Swindell realized that Ahsharah, 8, was wearing a tattered pair that were two sizes too small.

Now, Ahsharah has a new pair of size-4 "Wizards of Waverly Place" sneakers that match her backpack.

"Some people complain about name brands," Swindell said. "But as long as kids have some shoes that are durable, that's a good thing."
