| Teens fill shoeboxes with gifts for kids around the world - News-Press Posted: 27 Nov 2010 02:22 AM PST The Community Center at Mackle Park buzzed with excitement in the spirit of giving. The city of Marco Island's Teen Center partnered with the Winterberry Christian Academy's students to collect donations for their chosen community service project, Operation Christmas Child. This effort sends shoeboxes filled with gifts and necessities to children around the world whose lives have been shaken by the effects of war, natural disasters, terrorism, disease, poverty and famine. For the past couple of weeks the Winterberry Christian Academy and city of Marco Island Parks and Recreation Department have been collecting donations for the Operation Christmas Child Packaging Party held at Mackle Park. About 30 students from the Winterberry Christian Academy, along with a few other teens hanging out at the park, came together to pack 68 boxes filled with holiday blessings for boys and girls in need around the world. Derrick Rodriguez with the Subway of the Shops of Marco donated sandwich party platters and cookies to satisfy the teens' appetites after all of their hard work. This proved to be an incredible community service effort inspired and organized by local teens. Participants said they look forward to this becoming an annual event.
