| Kids given back-to-school items on Skid Row - KABC Posted: 07 Oct 2010 01:05 PM PDT DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A special back-to-school giveaway is giving help and hope to thousands of children on downtown Los Angeles' Skid Row. About 5,000 low-income children are getting school supplies, new shoes, and a hot lunch at the 22nd annual back-to-school giveaway at the Fred Jordan Missions. The event will go on throughout the day on Thursday, until all the shoes and clothes are given away. For some of the kids, this is the first time they're getting the new items. The shoes from Foot Locker are a big deal. "The important thing is shoes for back-to-school and clothes--it always helps to have extra clothing," said Yolanda Jenkins, a parent. Organizers said that this year the need is even bigger, because many parents are struggling to make ends meet in this economy. That same struggle holds true for Fred Jordan Missions, which has been helping those in need since 1944. Organizers said donations are down nearly 40 percent, and it's affecting the clothing drive. "This year, for the first time, we don't have nearly enough. We're probably over 3,000 pairs short for jeans for the kids," said Willie Jordan of the mission. "I got some new shoes, and some new clothes and a new backpack," said 8-year-old Lizbeth Ochoa. In addition to the clothes and supplies, the kids also got makeovers, because volunteers provided free haircuts. (Copyright ©2010 KABC-TV/DT. All Rights Reserved.) | Couple jailed for tying kids to their beds - Investors Business Daily Posted: 09 Oct 2010 10:47 AM PDT LOS ANGELES, Oct 9, 2010 (UPI via COMTEX) -- A 26-year-old California woman and her boyfriend have been sentenced to 270 days in jail for tying up their sons so they could sleep better, officials said. Orange County residents Cheryl Ann Stuart, 25, and Mario Alberto Colin, 31, pleaded guilty to two felony counts of child abuse and one felony count of corporal injury to a child, The Los Angeles Times reported. Police said Stuart tied her sons, 2 and 5, to their crib and bed with elastic bandages and shoe laces so "she could sleep well" and not worry about them running around, the Times said. Police also said the children were beaten and improperly fed. The parents were also sentenced to three years of probation, the report said.

| Skid Row Kids Line Up for School Supplies - msnbc.com Posted: 07 Oct 2010 12:44 PM PDT Families and kids in need got in line as early at 4 a.m. Thursday in front of the Fred Jordan Mission to receive backpacks full of new school supplies, shoes, toiletries and haircuts. Continuing what is billed as the nation's largest "back-to-school" giveaway, the Fred Jordan Mission expected 5,000 of Los Angeles's poorest kids at the mission to receive what are some kids first and only pair of new shoes, as well other essentials like notebooks, pens, backpacks, socks, jeans and hygiene kits. Although Thursday's event is the 22nd annual "back-to-school" giveaway at the mission, it was drastically re-organized this year in hopes to avoid some of last year's pitfalls. The struggling economy was blamed for the crush of people last year, more than 5,500, some of who camped out overnight and started waiting three days before the giveaway. The crowd clogged the streets, creating trash, inhibiting local businesses and blocking deliveries. Prostitutes and drug dealers overtook portable toilets set up at the event. This year, families had to pre-register for the event, receiving a wristband for a two-hour timeslot to go pick up their supplies. The registration was expected to lessen lines and prevent people camping out overnight. Police and volunteers also patrolled, making sure that everything goes smoothly. "We tried to work with the community partners, businesses, police and city officials to see what they would like, how to help them, and at the same time help the poorest members of our society," said event organizer Suzanna Choi in an interview with NBCLA reporter Angie Crouch. Three hundred volunteers will help hand out products, school supplies from companies like Foot Locker, Unilever, In-N-Out Burger, Wal-Mart and Lucky Brand. Paul Mitchell stylists will also provide free haircuts. The mission is welcoming non-registered kids as well. From 9 a.m. until 3 p.m., they planned to give out all of the available supplies. Choi says the event is absolutely necessary for the kids living on Skid Row and others in poverty. "The numbers coming to the Mission have skyrocketed," she said. "People are coming for clothing, food and shoes and at the same time, donations have gone down."
