| Cheap costume ideas for kids - Miami Herald Posted: 18 Oct 2010 04:45 AM PDT You don't need to spend big bucks to get a costume for your kids that will win the school's Halloween costume contest. You should be able to look inside your own closets to find easily recognizable and classic looks. The Cowboy: For the gunslinger, grab a pair of jeans (for girls, a jean skirt instead of jeans), cowboy boots (or brown tennis shoes), a plaid button-up shirt, a red bandanna tied around the neck, and cowboy hat (procured from any grocery store from the holiday aisle will do). If you have a toy holster on hand, even better. A little rope to make a fake lasso, and he's really authentic. The Little Indian Girl: For the Native American Indian girl, find an a-line tan or brown dress, and a pair of moccasins. Add a feather to her hair and a little stripe of red lipstick to create some facepaint. (If you are extra handy, make your own dress out of a dark brown sheet, cutting out the neck and arms and creating faux fringe at the bottom.) The Littlest Ghost: One of the fastest and cheapest of Halloween costumes is the always reliable ghost costume. Take a white sheet, and cut out holes where the mouth and eyes go. Outline the area with a Sharpies to give it extra oomph. Make sure your child knows how to say "Boo" on cue. The Detective: If you have a trench coat handy and a low-slung fedora hat borrowed from dad, anyone can become a private eye. Stuff the pockets with a notepad, a pair of toy cufflinks, and hang some binoculars around the detective's neck. The neighbors will think that they are in the midst of the next Sherlock Holmes. The Pirate: Turn the tiny members of your household into swashbuckling pirates with a pair of dark jeans or sweatpants (black, preferred), a striped shirt, an eyepatch, and a little stubble created with some brown or grey eyeshadow. Top it off a bandana on his or her head, and a toy sword. Just make sure you teach them how to say, "Argh." | 5 Tips to Get Your Kids Up and Out the Door - Associated Content Posted: 17 Oct 2010 01:50 PM PDT Fourth, make sure your children know what is required of them in the morning, especially if they are still young. Make a list, with pictures (if necessary). Have the list include things such as brush teeth, wash face, Fifth, make breakfast time the first morning deadline of your family's day. This is hugely beneficial because it gives you a tiny buffer if things are running late, but it builds in quality time with your family to start your day off on the right foot. My children's bus comes at 8:15am. I have my children come to the table by 8:00am. They must be completely ready for school and have their backpacks and coats set by the front door. Then, we make and eat breakfast together and talk about our day. I find that my children are more talkative and open and pleasant at breakfast now then they are at dinner. We have all enjoyed our morning routine so much that my children are usually completely ready and at the table ten minutes earlier and I really feel it has increased the quality of my relationship with my children. | Belichick: 'Really proud of those kids' - ESPN.com Posted: 17 Oct 2010 05:47 PM PDT FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – One Patriots player said that following the team's 23-20 overtime win over the Ravens, head coach Bill Belichick was as excited as he's seen him. Belichick's excitement carried over into his post-game press conference. "That was a good win for our football team. I'm really proud of those kids," Belichick said of the fifth-youngest squad in the NFL. "They played hard – 10 points down in the fourth quarter, then rallied, fought through it in overtime. It's really just a heck of a job by our players. You have to give them all the credit in the world. "I know a lot of people doubted that they could do it, our second half and all that. To come back from behind against a team like Baltimore, and win it at the end. … We had a lot of big plays out there. You could talk about everybody. They all contributed. It was a real team effort against a real good football team. Baltimore has a good club. They do a lot of things well. Fortunately, we were able to do one or two things better than they did today. "We didn't do very good to start the game. They drove right down the field. Another bad drive there at the start of the second quarter and then didn't do very well there in the third quarter. We didn't have good field position, we didn't play well. Overall, I thought we competed hard. They've got good players. They've got a good team. We made some plays; they made some plays. It was a back-and-forth kind of game, but I thought the one thing we did was to keep fighting. "It was just a good back-and-forth battle the whole way. You love the competition of those games. It's so much better when you come out on top, but it was a good football game. I can't imagine anybody that saw that wouldn't feel that way. "I'm really proud of our team. We have a good challenge ahead of us going out to San Diego, but we're going to enjoy this one for a little while and get back to work." Belichick cited the leadership of the team's captains as a big part of the week, which included veteran Alge Crumpler, who was elected captain on Wednesday. Crumpler joins Tom Brady, Kevin Faulk, Vince Wilfork and Jerod Mayo as captains. "Those guys did a real good job of staying focused, staying positive and really working hard and setting an example. Everybody else followed. You can give them a lot of credit on this one, too," Belichick said. And we could be seeing Belichick sport the pink-soled shoes he wore Sunday (in support of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month) more often. "Yeah, I should [stick with the shoes]. I should. I could wear them to the prom."
