Artist Helps Kids Discover Life Through Shoes

Due budget cutbacks in Miami-Dade and Broward school districts, some students no longer have the opportunity to experience art class. Now a local man is trying to turn that around and inspire students to take a walk in his shoes.

George Gadson is an artist and an advocate.

"I am an advocate for art education and unfortunately that's being cut from the schools and it's going to affect our kids" said Gadson.

Gadson paired up with the SmARTS Program to bring the arts back to schools where funding had been cut.

"Studies and research shows repeatedly that art helps kids do their problem solving, critical thinking skills, all those things that's necessary both in the classroom but also those life skills" said Gadson.

During a recent visit to Central Park Elementary in Plantation he led students in a program called "Walk In My Shoes".

"These are their own personal shoes, they brought a shoe that really has significance to them so it allows them to express themselves artistically," Gadson explained.

Students like 8-year-old Ryan Drag loved the idea of turning their shoes into a memory. The shoe he brought was important to him because "I wore it when I played basketball," he said.

While the students pull out the paints and glob on the glitter, they're also sharing stories about their lives. Gadson incorporates the art project into the teacher's curriculum, explaining "They will write an essay, as if the shoe is talking and the shoe tells of its journey".

8-year-old Marissa Tessier described what the story that the shoe in her essay will share, "It tells that when I run, it feels like I'm flying."

As a volunteer, Gadson hopes that the students not only have the chance to experience art but also the chance to experience what can happen when you find a unique way to give back to your community.

"More importantly, it's to show them that there is a responsibility that's part of being a good citizen so that you can give, and when you give it comes back to you" said Gadson.
