Last Updated On: 5/10/2010 9:37:22 AM It's been said to really understand someone you need to walk a mile in his shoes. Some Metro-Atlanta teens have taken that message to heart in an effort that should be music to the ears of children in need of shoes. The Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra has been busy preparing for their spring concerts. These talented teens come from all over metro-Atlanta and are selected by audition. Working together they play some of the world's most difficult and beautiful music. But now in addition to making great music, they are making a difference in the world, working to help kids who are too poor to own shoes. And in a show of empathy the orchestra went without shoes during one of their rehersals. Viola player Drew Forde has been leading the effort. "We don't want this to be a gimmick. We don't want this to be like we're picking fun at them," he said. "No. We want to show that we're having compassion, we understand their struggle and we want to experience it in our own way." Even their conductor, Jere Flint joined in. In his 30 years conducting the ASYO, he's never witnessed a community service effort like this. "No, not as a group, not as 120 kids forming this idea of giving shoes away around the world, worldwide impact," he said. "It's unbelievable." The musicians have been going to their local communities asking for lightly worn shoes and donations. Everything will be collected at their final concert on May 16th at Symphony Hall. "I really feel like it will catch fire if one person goes and tells "hey, I'm donating some shoes, do you want to donate some shoes with me?" said Drew. The shoes will be shipped to the Illinois based "Share Your Soles Foundation" that distributes shoes to needy children around the world. As Maestro Flint points out, it gives new meaning to an old phrase. "I like to say just as music is good for the soul, S-O-U-L," he added "music is also good for the soles." If you would like to help, the orchestra asks that you bring new or gently worn shoes and $1 per pair to cover shipping to the Woodruff Arts Center at 1280 Peachtree Str, NE., Atlanta 30309 on Sunday May 16 between 4PM and 8PM. The Learning RX in Buckhead is accepting early drop-offs at their office at 5252 Roswell Road, suite 100, Atlanta 30329 until Friday, May 14. | He grew into his father's shoes - and beyond - Philadelphia Daily News Posted: 10 May 2010 09:58 AM PDT Fourth in a series of profiles of Pennsylvania's gubernatorial candidates. In the 1970s, eighth grader Tony Williams' daily trek from West Philadelphia to Conwell Middle Magnet School in Kensington was a shuttle tour of the city's gangs by foot, bus, and train. First stop, land of the Creek. Next stop, home of the Moon. Members of the Zulu Nation rode the Market-Frankford Line. Last stop, Kensington, where, Williams remembers, "They didn't like anybody." Thus began State Sen. Anthony Hardy Williams' journey to where he is today: a candidate for governor whose late entrance and lavish financing have changed the dynamics of the May 18 Democratic primary. He has been carried to this point by his support for charter schools and school choice - the ability of all parents to have their tax money pay for their children's education, wherever that may be. Why take a stand that puts him at odds with many fellow Democratic officeholders and the teachers unions? Williams, 53, points to his own life. "I had parents create options for me," he says, "and I was a troubled kid." The toughest gangHe was a charismatic teenager, distracted by his surroundings and uninterested in academics. He was staying out late, getting into fights, hanging with hoodlums. But at home in the 5900 block of Cobbs Creek Parkway, there was another crew you didn't mess with. "All the moms were teachers," says childhood friend Mark Lomax, whose mother was a charter member of that gang. For science teacher Carole Williams, the financial and familial sacrifices of being married to a politician - longtime legislator Hardy Williams - did not extend to education. Her eldest children, Lisa and Tony, were forced out of an overcrowded school and into a mostly white one, with black kids bunched in one class. So she sent them across town to Conwell, where Lisa flourished and Tony drifted. Finally, Carole Williams yanked her son out of public school. She called on her father, Warren Chew, a Haverford postal employee who delivered mail to the Main Line's Quaker elite. Chew, who founded Haverford's NAACP chapter, landed Tony at Westtown, a private boarding school in Chester County. Williams' friends thought he had been sent to reform school. He let them think so. He was so lonely at Westtown that he started to read. And study. English teacher Agnes Hayes summoned him after his first B. She informed him he "was not a B student," he remembers. The lightbulb went on. "All of a sudden," his mother says, "he realized he had a brain." His father's footstepsWilliams earned a degree in economics at Franklin and Marshall College and worked for a time in sales at PepsiCo Inc. before starting a vending business in the 1980s. But a lifetime of his father's cajoling had its effect. So did an event in his neighborhood 25 years ago this week: the police showdown with the MOVE cult that left 11 people dead and 61 homes burned. "I'm sitting in this city, where all this stuff is going on, and I'm not even connected," Williams recalled. "Like watching a movie."
