| Giving Needy Kids a Step Up - KFDA Posted: 11 May 2010 04:02 PM PDT by: Kristen Guilfoos Amarillo, Texas - Imagine having to choose between buying groceries and buying new shoes for your children. It's a harsh reality hundreds of area families face everyday, but now, as NewsChannel 10's Kristen Guilfoos tells us, a brand new organization is stepping up to help. More than 30,000 people live in poverty in Potter and Randall counties... And many times, it's the kids who suffer the most. They may only have a few changes of clothes to wear all year, and it's not uncommon for them to have to borrow shoes from friends. That's exactly why the Multihousing Outreach Ministry is starting "A Step Up".... A shoe closet ministry to give shoes to kids of all ages around our area. The idea was born after seeing a drastic change in the wish lists during their Christmas present program. Jeff Parsons says, "In 2007 we had about 30% of the students request shoes. In 2008 that went up to about 45 or 50% And this last year, out of 868 kids that we've helped, over 60% requested shoes." They'll be collecting shoes all summer... The first distribution will be right before school starts in the fall. If you'd like to donate shoes or money to their efforts, you can drop it off at the Amarillo Area Baptist Association.
