| Posted: 07 May 2010 06:27 AM PDT SHELBY — Members of the FISH/FCA Club at Crest Middle School took off their shoes after school Wednesday to experience a fraction of what it's like for children in Nicaragua.
Jared Triplett, 12, made half a lap barefoot around the scorching pavement of the track, before he ducked into the grass.
"I got bit by ants," said Jared, after participating in "Walk a Mile in Someone Else's Shoes."
"The kids in Nicaragua have to do that every day for miles and miles. I couldn't do it. I'm thankful that I have shoes to put on if it starts feeling bad, but they do not."
Club members got the idea to collect shoes from Cameron West, the youth director at Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church. They contacted the Greater Cleveland County Baptist Association, which has sponsored seven trips to Nicaragua and asked students and teachers to bring their old shoes. Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church donated 75 pairs of shoes and the Dollar Tree store at Wal-Mart plaza donated 41 pairs.
As she packed up the more than 700 pairs of shoes collected, Katie Harris, missions team leader of the Baptist Association, said she could just imagine the faces of the children in Nicaragua when they get the shoes.
"It will make their lives easier," she said. "We know the kids and know which shoes they will choose."
Harris said because of the dirt and cobblestone streets in Nicaragua, shoes wear out quickly and some people just can't afford them.
The conditions in Nicaragua made an impression on Jenna Hamrick, 14.
"We collected shoes because we wanted to reduce the rate of how many kids die in Nicaragua because their feet get infected — they get so many diseases from shallow cuts in the bottom of their feet," she said. "They travel for miles and miles to get water, and we take everything for granted."
The club sponsors are Glenda Ogren, Joanna Runyon and Karen Sain, and Ernie Blanton is the FCA Area Director. Before the students took laps around the track, Blanton talked about the work they have done.
"This FCA group has done more than any huddle in the county in the way of outreach mission projects," he said. "We have some good kids. We are blessed to have active huddles in all four middle schools, four high schools and Gardner-Webb University."

| Three Iconic Seattle Organizations Have Teamed up to Recognize Swedish Medical Center-Born Babies at Three Local Nordstrom Stores via a Custom Microsoft Surface Experience Application Developed by POP Swedish, one of the region's largest and most comprehensive non-profit health-care providers, today announced that Microsoft Corp. and Nordstrom have joined them in celebration of Swedish's 100th anniversary this year. All three Seattle brands have teamed up to expand the 'I'm a Swedish Baby' Photo Contest in an effort to recognize some of the many babies born in Swedish's health-care system over the past 100 years. This week, Microsoft Surface units were installed in three Nordstrom locations including Downtown Seattle on May 3, Bellevue Square on May 4 and Alderwood Mall in Lynnwood on May 5. They will be on display throughout the month. Microsoft Surface will provide an interface for Nordstrom shoppers to learn more about the 'I'm a Swedish Baby' Photo Contest, browse submitted photos, search for Swedish babies and read their personal stories. Using stamps, children will also be able to create virtual art work of stars, dogs and hearts on Surface as a fun activity while shopping. POP, a Seattle-based digital agency, developed the interactive Surface application for Swedish.
