Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital/Ride the Rainbow Gala

It seemed like everyone who was anyone related to Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital turned out for the hospital's biennial gala on April 17 at the Renaissance Cleveland Hotel downtown. A 1960s theme had a few hundred of the 1,000 guests donning vintage togs while the majority of the crowd came in luxurious casual styles -- a departure from the usual black-tie gala. A rousing cocktail hour rocked the house with a little help from the Nerve, a rock band made up of University Hospitals employees. PDQ just happened to show up as they belted out a version of "Money (That's What I Want)." Vibrant sunflowers filled the grand ballroom for the program where guests dined on a double main entree of pistachio-crusted filet of beef and herb-marinated grouper. Following a live auction for fabulous trips and sports rarities, as well as tickets to "The Oprah Winfrey Show," the crowd got on the dance floor with the Return, a Beatles cover band. The festive happening raised more than $800,000 for the hospital, according to spokeswoman Meagan Meyer.

AIDS Taskforce of Greater Cleveland/Art Cares Benefit Art Auction

Artists, their friends and the aesthetes who patronize them came out in force on April 17 for the seventh annual Art Cares Benefit Art Auction for the AIDS Taskforce of Greater Cleveland. The artsy crowd of 500 filled the airy space at Saigon Plaza on the city's West Side for a lively evening of shopping and socializing for the cause. Guests were gabbing so much the auctioneer could hardly get the crowd to quiet down to auction off more than 40 pieces donated by local artists. Another dozen artists were featured in a silent auction. Earl Pike, chief executive officer of the group, said he hoped the benefit would help raise $40,000 to $50,000. "All funds go toward providing housing and food for poor people here [in Northeast Ohio] living with HIV," he said.

Shoes and Clothes for Kids/Fool's Frolic

Moxie in Beachwood was transformed into a giant Monopoly board on April 15 for the third annual Shoes and Clothes for Kids "Fool's Frolic" fundraiser. More than 300 guests spent tax day sampling fine food and libations while strolling along Mediterranean Avenue, Pacific Avenue and the Boardwalk and enjoying a variety of entertainment. Grand-prize winners took home a fabulous two-night trip to South Beach. Event organizers said they expected to raise $35,000. Shoes and Clothes for Kids provides shoes, clothes, other items and programs for thousands of children and infants in the Greater Cleveland area.
